Bringing it ‘Right Back’ | What I learned from a Khalid song

Right Back by Khalid album cover, but it also just shows such a perfect summer vibe.

Yes, I meant to put the cover of the remix because this is honestly my favourite version of Right Back.

First of all, can I just say that it’s the ultimate summer song. To me the laid-back beat in background accenting Khalid’s smooth voice. It makes any car ride an absolute breeze reminding us of the warm sun and the fresh air.

Recently, upon relistening, I found the lyrics to be a whole other beautiful side to this song. In fact, it’s a beautiful balled about love.

Let’s talk lyrics

“I just like the way it feels when you’re around

When you’re around, ah

Now I know we’re not dating, nah

Maybe soon by the way things go, we’ve been talking for ages

Take it step by step, slow it down, we just need to be patient, love

If the love feels good and it’s real, it’ll all work out”

It doesn’t seem like much when we’re listening to it, but if you just think about what it means, it’s actually pretty romantic.

The person saying this doesn’t want to rush things with the person that they’re infatuated with. They just want to be in their company. To be beside them.

It’s a nice break from what we usually see in social media and Hollywood these days.

So what did I learn?

I really loved the message of this song. It was even in the title.

Right back – as in, if you’re not comfortable moving forward, we can take it right back. We can take it slow.

I think there’s a beauty in waiting. That the longer we wait for something, the more we are able to appreciate getting what we want, when we finally do.

Take a relationship between two people for example.

I genuinely believe that it doesn’t matter how long you know someone before the two of you start dating because I think it really depends on how you feel for each other.

However, the path that leads to waiting usually gives the two people plenty of time to get to know each other. To learn to appreciate each other’s company, to make each other laugh. And really, to become each other’s friend.

When two people wait for a relationship to blossom, it takes the pressure off of moving too fast. Which is something I think Khalid did a really amazing job with in this song.

Where this song brings me Right Back to

I think one of the best things about music is the fact that it is often associated to memories. To me, this song, especially this remixed version, brings me back to the summer of 2019.

It reminds me of starting my internship in the city. Seeing my friends after work, meeting up for drinks, dinners, balcony late night talks.

It was one of the best summers I ever had and at the end of it all, I went to a Khalid concert. When this song was being sung, I felt it all.

That was exactly what summer was all about.

Sun, friends, music, good times. Just pure happiness.

Every time I listen to this song, it takes me right back.

It takes me back to a time where we could be surrounded by people and it wouldn’t matter. A time when you could go anywhere and everywhere, and the only concern you had was whether or not you had enough hours in those perfect days.

Where almost every night ended with a smile and every morning started with a jolt of energy. Where there was no stress, no worries, no problems.

I’m not saying I’m not appreciative of everything I have right now. I’m just saying that going Right Back to that perfect summer can be pretty nice sometimes.

What are some of your favourite summer memories that are associated with songs?
